A volunteering tree planting initiative that we will never forget!
In late June 2016, the Solea forest, one of the largest forest areas of the country, suffered a devastating fire, that has been marked as one of the country’s biggest tragedies. The fire which raged for 5 days, burnt 18.57 km² of virgin pine forest and claimed the lives of two firefighters while badly injured 3 others.
Our company, true to the commitment to support our country, was there. During the fire and after. During those sad moments we were actively present from day one, by providing products to the hundreds of firefighters and volunteers that struggled day and night with the deadly flames. The Coca‑Cola Company was kind enough to donate €50,000 that were given to the families of the firefighters that lost their lives and were wounded in the fires, during a modest ceremony at the presence of the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, the Director of the Forest Department and members of Red Cross Cyprus.
And on the 5th of December, National Volunteers Day, we announced an internal volunteering tree planting initiaitive on our Facebook Page, Lanitis Bros.
Through a Christmas activation, under the tagline “For each wish you make we plant a tree”, aiming to spread awareness and engage our community with its own contribution. We asked our fans to post a comment with their wish and promised that for every wish they would make, we would plant a tree on the 14th of December! And we did!
Despite the snow and cold weather conditions, 64 colleagues eagerly volunteered and participated in the planting of 660 trees, with the guidance of the Forestry Department. Visiting the burnt forest and planting some small hope for the next generations was a very engaging, unforgettable experience that truly marked our volunteers hearts and minds.
“It was a great, although freezing cold experience! But I was warmed just by the fact that we were giving back to the community and helping to bring life back to our important forests with the hope that my children someday will be able to enjoy it.” Nicola Christodoulides - Brand Manager NCBs & WATER
“Loved to contribute back to the forest life again! It was a rainy-snowy day but sunny in our hearts!” Lemonia Cravari, Personal Assistant
