"Every time someone enjoys their favourite Coca‑Cola and Coca – Cola Zero soft drinks in the seasonal collectable glass contour bottles, Coca‑Cola will contribute to the clean-up of 10 beaches and their seabeds, under the “Zero Waste Beach” project.


Coca‑Cola’s collectable bottles will support an important environmental cause this summer. The collectable glass contour bottles, which will circulate again this summer, will support the fight against marine plastic pollution and specifically the innovative “Zero Waste Beach” project.

 This summer, 15% of Coca‑Cola’s net proceeds from the sale of its collectable bottles will go towards cleaning up ten beaches and their seabeds, thereby supporting their "Zero Waste Beach" project. By enjoying their favourite soft drinks in the collectable bottles, consumers will at the same time contribute to Coca‑Cola’s 'World Without Waste' vision. The collectable glass contour bottles are sold at specific HORECA points across the island and its design was inspired by the history, tradition and mythology of our country.

 It should be noted that the partners of “Zero Waste Beach” project, AKTI Project and Research Centre and Coca‑Cola/Lanitis Bros, were called to carry out a very difficult task last week and particularly, support the fight against marine plastic pollution. Coca‑Cola and AKTI launched this year’s initiatives aiming to tackle marine plastic pollution, at the Mackenzie reef in Larnaca, under the “Zero Waste Beach” project. The launch coincided with World Oceans Day, which was established in 2017 and is celebrated annually on 8 June. Specifically, there were simultaneous seabed clean-ups in 4 different locations in Cyprus. More than 40 professional divers cleaned up the natural reefs of Protaras, Larnaca, Limassol and Paphos. Apart from the Mackenzie reef in Larnaca, they also cleaned up the Moulia reef in Paphos, the Green Bay (fishing shelter) in Protaras and the Dasoudi beach in Limassol. This is the first time that deep-sea clean-ups are carried out at various locations on the island simultaneously.

 A group of journalists, specialising in Environmental reporting, observed the clean-up of the Mackenzie reef in Larnaca aboard a ship. They witnessed how polluted Cypriot seas are and observed the difficult task of the divers, who managed to retrieve the litter with a great deal of perseverance and effort. The divers were able to clean up the reef, which is vital for biodiversity. In the presence of media representatives, AKTI’s scientists analysed the detrimental consequences of marine plastic pollution for both marine and human life. Meanwhile, they highlighted the fact that the most efficient way to tackle the problem of marine plastic pollution is to take specific measures, in order to drastically reduce the amount of waste that ends up in the seas. This is exactly the purpose of the “Zero Waste Beach” project.

Lanitis Bros’ Communications and Public Relations Manager, Kalia Patsia, said she is very proud to support the “Zero Waste Beach” project and plans to expand it nationally this year: "On the one hand, we are stepping up the efforts to raise awareness on the global issue of marine plastic pollution and, on the other hand, we are aiming to expand the Responsible Coastal Business Network and promote the adoption of responsible and sustainable practices at the local level. Coca‑Cola supports the “Zero Waste Beach” project as part of the company’s global vision for a " World Without Waste", underlined Mrs Patsia.

Coca‑Cola’s season campaign will come to an end in October with the completion of six more seabed and beach clean-ups.
