TWO COCA-COLA HBC CYPRUS INITIATIVES RECEIVE THREE AWARDS
Coca‑Cola HBC Cyprus gained recognition as well as top awards at the Cyprus Responsible Business Awards 2019. In total, the company received three awards for two of its most important Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives, “Zero Waste Beach” and “Mission Water”. More specifically, it received a gold award for both initiatives in the Environment/Sustainable Growth section of the ‘Private Businesses’ category. Furthermore, “Mission Water” ranked second in the natural resource management section, while “Zero Waste Beach” ranked third in the waste management section.
The awards were received on behalf of Coca‑Cola Cyprus by the Public Affairs & Communications Manager at Coca‑Cola HBC Cyprus, Kalia Patsia, who said she was proud of the two initiatives, which are part of the broader effort to protect the environment and ensure sustainable growth.“It is with great joy and pride that we welcome these awards, as recognition of the huge effort we are making with our partners to promote sustainability and the protection of the environment. Our goal is to leave a positive footprint on society, while also inspiring and mobilising the public to engage in a top cause,” said Mrs Patsia.
“Mission Water” was launched in 2013, funded exclusively by the Coca‑Cola Foundation with $680,000, in cooperation with the international organisation Global Water Partnership Mediterranean (GWP-Med). It is part of the commitment by Coca‑Cola HBC Cyprus and Coca‑Cola to manage natural resources and raw material responsibly in order to ensure sustainable growth. The specific initiative promotes the more effective management of water, as well as the use of alternative types of water, such as rainwater or greywater, to cover secondary needs. Through “Mission Water”, 19 projects of national importance were carried out and 40,273,000 litres of water were saved annually, benefiting 83,621 Cyprus residents. Our country will benefit from the effects of “Mission Water” for many more years to come.
The “Zero Waste Beach” initiative is considered a pioneer in the effort to protect the environment. It is implemented in cooperation with AKTI Project & Research Centre and the support of the Coca‑Cola foundation, focusing on tackling marine plastic pollution. Specifically, the aim of the programme is to promote innovative and sustainable practices among coastal businesses, local authorities and the general public. In addition, through various actions it aims to establish annual clean-up campaigns, reduce waste so that it does not end up in Cyprus’ seas and coastal areas, raise awareness among public opinion over the issue of marine pollution, as well as identify and record the recyclable waste produced by coastal businesses.
The awards ceremony for the Cyprus Responsible Business Awards 2019 was held at the Presidential Palace last Thursday, under the auspices of His Excellency, the President of the Republic, Mr Nicos Anastasiades, as well as the Directorate-General for European Programs, Coordination and Development and the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
The awards aimed to showcase and reward the projects, ideas and partnerships behind the Responsible Businesses and Organisations of Cyprus in the principles of sustainability, corporate social responsibility and sustainable and social development. Senior executives of companies and other organisations attended the awards ceremony. The winners were selected by a special committee, consisting of professors and experts of the sector.
